Source: EC considers meeting with EU states on Nord Stream 2

BRUSSELS, Aug 9 (PRIME) -- The European Commission is considering a meeting with the E.U. countries to discuss the Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project, a source in the E.U. told PRIME on Monday.

"The European Commission is in constant contact with the countries members of the E.U. on their energy policy issues, including Nord Stream 2, but they have not consulted with us on the bilateral agreement. We are already in contact with the Slovenian chairman in the (E.U.) Council on a possible meeting with the member states on the issue," the source said.

The Nord Stream 2 project envisages construction of two lines of a natural gas pipeline with an annual capacity of up to 55 billion cubic meters, running from the Russian shore to Germany under the Baltic Sea. Russian gas giant Gazprom builds the pipeline together with Germany’s Uniper and Wintershall Dea, Royal Dutch Shell, Austria’s OMV, and France’s Engie. The U.S. and Germany signed a deal in July in order to support Ukraine, which might lose the traffic after the launch of the pipeline.
